Suggestive village on Amalfitan coast, with the shape of an
amphitheater in the point in which the valley of Tramonti opens on
the sea. On the shore there are still visible numerous rests of the
ancient walls and of the watch towers, prepared once, around the
city to protect the inhabited area from the attacks coming from the
sea.
Boast of Maiori is the space of which it prepares, surely more in
comparison to the other coastal places; its beautiful waterfront
remains an enchanting place where tourists and locals are given
appointment for of the walks accompanied by a pleasant sea breeze.
Today after Amafi and Positano, Maiori, represents one of the places
of the coastline more aspired by the international tourism.
Historical outlines
Of
probable Roman foundation, in the High Middle Ages, Maiori belonged
to the Neapolitan Dukedom up to the IX century when, ransacked by
the duke of Benevento Sicario, it asked the protection of the
dawning Amalfi Republic.
Maiori maintained so, a certain importance from the commercial
point, and for this in the 1622 Phillip V, raised it to regal city.
After then, maritime activity slowly suffered a contraction in
favour of the agriculture and, in the XX century, it was definitely
consecrated to the tourism.
